Description: This piece is inspired by the fact that addicts (and non-addicts too) often can't fully appreciate and engage with their lives at the moment. Our recovery program tells us that if we choose to live in the day that we will feel less fear and anxiety, be less dissatisfied, and be more accepting of ourselves, and of world as it is. However, it's hard to do that because we have such a strong habit of wasting time on worry, fear, anger, resistance, and regret - instead of doing what we need to do to recover and make the most of the life we actually are given. That is why the names of these “distractions” are written at the tops of vortexes (that have the power to trap and draw you in) and why each of the distractions is connected by wire and fishing hooks to the center Plexiglas construction admonishing one to live in the day. Like with other pieces in this series, viewers when they approach this piece will see themselves reflected in the black reflective surface on which the “live in the day” construction is mounted. Another neat thing about this construction is that the words “live in the day” are carved into foam in such a way that approaching from the left, the viewer can read the saying directly, but if the approach is from the right, the reflection of the saying in the surface also reveals the words properly.
